BISMARCK – The grassroots group Americans for Prosperity announced the group’s “No Taxpayer Left Behind” initiative today. The citizen group called for the creation of long-term, meaningful tax relief for all North Dakota citizens.
“When it comes to providing long-term meaningful tax relief for North Dakota citizens, no taxpayer should be left behind,” Americans for Prosperity – North Dakota State Director Duane Sand said. “Americans for Prosperity is here to make sure that lawmakers enact sound, common sense proposals to provide tax relief to every North Dakotan.”
“In the face of our $550 million plus budget surplus, this goal should be achievable,” Sand continued. “Of the 1,000 bills introduced so far this session, only two provide meaningful, sustainable tax relief for everyone. We need to do better.”
Rep. Al Carlson (R-41) joined Sand at the podium to discuss HB 1170, a proposal for an income tax rate reduction that addresses Americans for Prosperity’s goal. “This proposal is right because it reaches all North Dakota citizens, and it will help to keep the state from over-collecting taxes as we move forward,” Sand said. “I encourage legislators to back this proposal and to continue to work toward finding this type of solution throughout the remainder of the session.”
Americans for Prosperity – North Dakota conducted a statewide Taxpayer Trust Tour in October 2006 to hear citizens’ opinions and concerns over how the state’s $500 million budget surplus should be used. One message was clear: at least some of the budget surplus should be given back to taxpayers in the form of a permanent tax rate reduction.
“This method of providing tax relief fires on all the right cylinders,” Sand concluded. “It includes all North Dakota taxpayers, it provides meaningful and sustainable tax relief, and it helps keep the state from over-charging North Dakota taxpayers again in the future. We encourage legislators to support permanent tax rate reductions, and we encourage the people of North Dakota to contact their legislators and express their support for them, as well”
